pulled pork and fried chicken tacos

grilled veggie taco w/tofu

Brookhaven-ites rejoice, there is a new resto in town. Verde Taqueria has established itself as the tucked away neighborhood's local watering-hole with its earthy landscape and affordable a la carte. The three musketeers of Mexican starters (Guac, Queso, Salsa) are nothing to write home about, served in their purest, most unmixed form.

To hit the money spot graze in the land of the tacos. The Fried Chicken and Pulled Pork tacos give you the southern twist and with moist, tender, and flavor packing success. The best part is customers can mix and match the ingredients on the taco menu to create a personalized piece of heaven. See my 3 buck bite review for Verde Taqueria here.

How to avoid the Memo Day Weekend hangover

Do, Die or Dead Confederate and Such
So, before you go off and barbeque with those new neighbors, old neighbors or get some new stakes to skewer some old snotty neighbors to put on the barbeque, get your plans straight to avoid the post-holiday weekend hangover. As with most situations, music is the good word to fix those morose feelings after Memo Day weekend. Go put your sweetest smelling scratch ’n’ sniff sticker on Wednesday, May 27th — just another in a long line of good days to be in Atlanta.

PC: Stomp and Stammer

Dead Heads: The BEST Georgia band going right now, Dead Confederate, keeps riding the wave of buzz that has new folks getting on board every new dawn to their dark and gloomy/sweet and solitary nouveaux grunge sounds with a free (!) show at The Earl (488 Flat Shoals Ave SE, East Atlanta, 30316, 404-522-3950). The show, which is only free if you sign up and local music rag site Stomp and Stammer and show up early, will be recorded for the band’s first live EP and follow up to 2008’s breath of ‘90s rock (in a good way, we promise) air that was Wrecking Ball. The guys from Athens build a stoned wall of reverby sound only to pull the curtain down with beefy guitar riffs and gritty, dense choruses. This live show will be like a religious experience at the alter of this town’s famous PBR bar.

PC: Carl Sandburg Visits Me In a Dream

National Pride: While you remember the folks that make us proud to hang the flag this weekend, Wednesday brings us a band that makes us proud to grab a beer and a cig in the dimly lit bar in our hearts (or, probably, neighborhoods) — bleak booze-rockers The National. The band’s 2007 effort Boxer still rings true as a late-night symposium on relationships of all kinds: you and your pals, you and your girl, you and your feelings for a cold pitcher on night hotter and sweatier than the guitar-drum gristle that oozes from The National’s music. For $25, the equally eerie Tabernacle (152 Luckie St, Downtown-Atlanta, 30303, 404-659-9022) hosts what is certain to be the best way to wash away the memories of the friend you punched at that pool party and the dame you saddled up to in your condo’s stairwell. Hey, why not meet ‘em both to the show?

PC: Villanova

Not Good for ‘Nova: Boy, is this not the night to book a show in Atlanta if you’re not one of those two aforementioned bands. A bad-luck-booking act called Villanova plays at Smith’s Olde Bar (1578 Piedmont Ave NE Midtown-Atlanta, 30324, 404-875-1522) and we wish him good luck. Maybe the band’s friends will come, because this show might have less people at it than a Mormon bookstore on Chanukah in Israel. Unless … is this is the Villanova basketball team’s traveling music group? Someone email us if this is the case — that might be worth a peak. Can you say 2010 March Madness promo?

Wifflanta: Where the Playas Play

Baseball, shmaseball — there’s a new game in town.

Just as surely as shmaseball is a real word (it’s official, so be quiet now), America has a new pastime. It is Wiffle ball and, yes, you might remember it from when you were like six. Well, now you’re 26 and you want some action. No, not that kind of action — anybody can get that as long as they have a map to Buckhead and a pastel polo — but the on-field sporting action that every still youngish person yearns for to wake up the echoes of past glory. Sure, you are the shift manager at Staples now, but remember when you won that game in your hometown a decade ago.

Glory can be yours again.

After much beer-drinking, experimentation and the help of some ant-riddled plywood from the dump, Milltown Arms Tavern (180 Carroll St SE, Cabbagetown-Atlanta, GA 30312, 404-827-0434) has resurrected a sport crazier than a postpartum Britney Spears haircut. A quick reading of the rules for the Wifflanta League (which can be found here or sent to you by emailing Milltown Arms Tavern ) prove just that … allow me:

-3-on-3 team competition

-Pegging runners

-Onsite Wifflanta stadium at the bar

-Hitting random objects to assure you a homer, an out or even a pitcher of beer

-Pitcher and first baseman combined into one evil out-making machine

-Drunkenness encouraged

Done and done.

The league lasts three weeks so far starting on May 30th and alternating weekends after that (lengthier depending on sign ups, so they say), is cheaper than those ridiculous kickball leagues and allows you unlimited wiffling, free booze and food, prizes, postgame music/trivia/dj sets by local bands. What more could you want? If you said a scraped knee, a bruise from a Wiffle curve into the thigh and a bucket of cold ones, I’ll see you out there at Wifflanta.

Your craving Fried Italian Artichokes from Shout but don't feel like buttoning up your Midtown best. Flying Biscuit's famed biscuits with cranberry apple butter are calling your name but the thought of the run-of-the-mill brunch wait makes you want to curse eggs n' bacon for life. Doc Green's Asian Sesame salad is just what the doctor ordered for a weary work week but your boss has called an emergency lunch meeting.

Fear not faithful foodies, we may have found a solution for your dead-end cravings. Major kudos to Thrillist for unearthing food delivery gem FoodPeople.com where ATLantans can order food from 50+ inside-the-perimeter restauraunts. Available restos will depend on where you are anchored down and there is a $14.95 order minimum (come on people, that's easy peasy). Swoon. Swoon. Swoon. Now that's what I call laissez-fare.
